Achieving success requires many qualities. Determination, commitment and willpower rank at the top of the list of traits that most successful people will have.
Some folks believe successful people are born with these qualities but, I beg to differ. If you ask any successful person they will likely tell you they were not born with these qualities. They found a way to develop these characteristics and conditioned themselves to use them effectively.
Here are three ways to hone in on these traits to stay laser-focused and productive:
1. Plan your day the night before
Before you go to bed at night, think about what you need to do tomorrow. This should include your attire, meals, emails, phone calls, meetings, and any important tasks you will need to complete. If you have children, be sure to plan their activities and for things you need to do to keep their day organized and on track as well.
Prepping meals ahead of time will allow you to make healthier food choices than you would by running out to grab a bite without planning ahead.
Write out your things-to-do list, schedule time on your calendar for responding to emails, and making phone calls. Decide to take control of your day by keeping focused and sticking to your plan.
Planning your day in advance is a good practice that will help you to avoid distractions and time wasters in your day.
2. Block off time for unexpected situations
Even with a well thought out plan, emergency situations and distractions will come up during the workday. Real emergencies can’t be avoided and will require your immediate attention. However, it’s important to recognize that every interruption does not equate to an emergency. Handle emergencies right away as they arise. Block off time on your calendar to respond to non-emergency type inquiries and requests.
By not responding to non-emergencies immediately, you give others the opportunity to rely on their own knowledge and critical thinking skills to resolve these issues themselves. You will also allow yourself to remain focused on sticking to your plan and achieving your goals.
3. Prioritize the most difficult tasks first
Most people agonize over completing their most challenging tasks. This leads to procrastination and unnecessary stress and anxiety. The best approach is to tackle difficult jobs right away while your mind is clear and fresh.
Once the toughest jobs are out of the way, reward yourself with break to refuel and reenergize. Get up and move around, stretch your legs, or take a walk. Then you can ease into a normal routine without tension and worry. This is a great time to focus on emails, phone calls and other normal daily activities.
Great habits and success go hand-in-hand. Successful people share many common qualities and habits they practice daily to keep them on track and focused on their goals.
Try these three basic tips if you are striving to create balance, stay focused and be productive.
