What is Self-Confidence?
Self-Confidence is a belief in ourselves and a feeling that pushes us beyond our thoughts and propels us into action. Without confidence we often play small and operate from a place of safety and security, which limits and confines our ability to soar.
When we embrace bold confidence, we believe in ourselves and we know that we’re talented, knowledgeable, well-equipped, and capable. We believe in our ability to attain success in every aspect of our lives. We are not bound by the beliefs or perceptions of others.
One of the biggest challenges facing female leaders in the workplace is finding the confidence to share our thoughts and ideas. Even the most talented, successful female business leaders and entrepreneurs struggle with hidden feelings of:
-
- Self-doubt
- Anxiety
- Fear
- Inadequacy
- Incompetence
When I ask some of my clients to share the reasons for their feelings of self-doubt at work, the comments that most often come up are . . .
“My biggest worry is that people won’t think I’m knowledgeable or well-prepared.”
“I’m afraid that my colleagues and clients won’t take me seriously.”
“I rarely speak up at business meetings because I don’t sound as polished as I’d like.”
Women in leadership roles often feel disregarded in the workplace and, at times, conditioned to believe that our thoughts and ideas are less valuable than that of our male colleagues, even when we are equally, if not more, knowledgeable, and experienced. Women are also more likely to deal with a strong, very loud inner critic telling us we are not good enough. Facing these types of situations frequently can trigger anxiety, doubt, and low self-esteem, which leads to lack of ambition, drive, and confidence.
Fortunately, with practice, women can ease their fears and shift their mindset to develop BOLD confidence that will help us to find our own unique voice so that we’ll be seen and heard.
Five easy habits to embrace BOLD confidence are as follows:
1. Communicate with Positivity
A confident woman understands the power of her words. She communicates in a positive way, choosing words that motivate, inspire, and empower others. She does not tear down those around her to look or feel good. With her positive attitude, she leaves a wonderful, lasting impression on everyone she meets.
2. Know Exactly Who You Are
A confident woman knows that she was fearfully and wonderfully made. Her faith is unshakeable. She is authentic and true to herself. She does not busy herself with mindless gossip and things that lack goodness, honor, and truth. Her time is consumed with productivity and making a difference in the world.
3. Walk in Your Purpose
A confident woman accepts the beauty of her flaws and imperfections. She shows up authentically and with integrity. She embraces her strengths and challenges herself to seek opportunities to stretch, expand, and grow. She is a life-long learner and knows the importance of personal and professional development and fulfillment. She is everything she was created to be.
4. Value & Appreciate Self-Care
A confident woman prioritizes her spiritual, mental, emotional, and physical well-being. While she is ambitious and driven in pursuing her goals, she knows that she can’t be any good to anyone unless she is good to herself first. She is prayerful, reflective, and makes time for exercise, relaxation, and plenty of rest. She is a hard worker, but unafraid to ask for help when she needs it. Self-care is an important part of her daily routine.
5. Set S.M.A.R.T. Goals
A confident woman understands the importance of setting goals and making an action plan to achieve them. Her goals are S.M.A.R.T.
-
- Specific
- Measurable
- Achievable
- Realistic
- Time Bound
A woman who sets goals and holds herself accountable for achieving them isn’t afraid to take a chance. If she tries and she fails, SO WHAT! She will learn from her mistakes and try again until she succeeds.
Women who embrace bold confidence know they are more than enough. They believe in themselves and their ability to succeed in life.
